To sign up for and use the League, you'll make an account on a League Node. A Node is its own website, and it's where the posts you make are hosted. Think of it as like an email address: you might have a Gmail account and your friend might have Outlook.com, but you can send emails to each other just fine. No matter which Node you join, you'll be able to see and reply to anyone else in the League, whatever Node they're on. And they'll be able to see your posts too.
Make sure you read the rules before signing up. You must be aged 18+ to join.
The choice can be a bit overwhelming. Here's some pointers.
Each node is run independently by someone who wants to be part of the League and agrees to moderate it according to the Website League Community Code and run software that avoids specific dark patterns.
That means whatever node you join, you can expect to feel just as much part of the League as on any other. However, the operators and the nodes themselves are located in different places around the world. Some operators just want to offer a general purpose place to post. Others want to run a space for a specific subculture or community. They'll tell you what the node is about in its description in the list.
You can click on the admin's profile in the list to see who runs each node and decide if there's someone you particularly trust.
The list also shows which country each node and its admin are based in. Choosing one nearby could make things perform better or help you find users who are located near you. Consider where you want your data hosted; you might want to choose one located in a jurisdiction you trust.
Do you already know someone on the League? You might like to join the same node as them.
Finally, if you want to be part of one of the themed nodes based around a specific theme or subculture, or see a URL that you love, you should go for it! But you don't have to be "on-topic" in your posts there. Your profile remains yours.
Unfortunately, it can be a little tricky to change your mind later. You can move your followers and following lists to another node and save a backup of your posts, but unfortunately you can't move your posts to another node at this time.
Can't make up your mind? Don't worry about it too much and pick one that you think has good vibes!
They're the software that League Nodes are based on. See also "How does this work for me?" in the FAQ.
Right now the nodes all run either Akkoma or GoToSocial. These are quite similar, but supported features do vary between them at the moment. We hope that this will be less of a problem in the future. The biggest difference is that Akkoma nodes come with their own interface for browsing and posting, while GoToSocial nodes will ask you to choose one after you've signed up. See 'next steps' for more information.
A node may be running a custom version of the software with special features. The node will tell you about this in its description in the list below or on its own website.
Of course! You are very welcome to become part of the League by hosting your own node. It requires some technical know-how, although we've tried to make it as simple as we can. You will need to be ready to make sure your node conforms to the rules and guidelines. Find out more on Information, our wiki.
If you're not up for that, just join an existing node from the list below.
The website league instance for doing things, if you feel like it. Friends of muffinlord, gunpla builders, scale modelers, and amateur radio operators preferred. You can engage or don't, it is your choice.

Lilypad is a general-purpose node in the Website League. We aim to make it a space where you can think your thoughts and have a place to frame them. Tell us about your hobbies, your esoteric thoughts, or just make silly jokes with your pals. πΈ

Once you've found a node you're happy with, click the button to go to the node's own website to sign up. You will also find information about that node's specific rules there. If you get lost on a page that says "About this instance", scroll down and look for a link that says "register for an account on this instance" or "sign-up page".
Afterwards, make sure to come back here and have a look at the next part, which is important!
Once you've joined your node, you can log into it using your choice of interface - it's the website or phone app that you use to browse and post on the League. Currently, most apps that are designed for Mastodon and the Fediverse will work, but we do particularly recommend that you try out Pillbug, which is a web app inspired by the design of Cohost and made with the League in mind.
Log in to your Node with Pillbug βΆIf you prefer Pillbug or another interface to the one your Node comes with, you can just ignore the Node's own interface and use the one you prefer for your day-to-day use of the League.
Without an algorithm telling you who you should follow, you may get your account set up and be unsure where to find other users. There are a few tricks for this. One is that you may have a local feed that shows you posts from the other users on your node. This can get you started - and then you can do it the old fashioned way, by clicking through to the profile of every new person you see to explore the social network.
Anyone can get involved in the running of the Website League, no matter what your relevant skills are. Find out more.
